Pentecostal Freedom

Acts 2:1-24. 37-47

Perhaps a more accurate beginning to the Pentecost Day story would read “They were all cowering together in one place” rather than “They were all together in one place.” (2:1)

For cowering they were, hiding out from the Roman Empire’s bloodthirsty battalions looking to put Jesus’ followers to humiliating death, as they had Jesus. 

So they locked themselves in, laid low, skulked around.

Would they live out their lives in the shadows, in this defensive, defeated posture?

Pentecost Day says NO!

Pentecost Day is the day the disciples go public.

Pentecost Day is a day of political rebellion and resistance.

Pentecost Day is the day God makes clear that the whole creation belongs to God and God will redeem it.

On Pentecost Day people from every culture, every race, “every nation under heaven” (2:5) no longer confront one another with violence but with conversation and common language.
Peter then preached the Gospel of God to this stunned crowd and 3000 converted to this persecuted little sect.

The way they lived together lent credibility to Peter’s preaching.  In contrast with the hierarchical economy of the Roman Empire, these converted ones shared all things in common and not a one of them was in need. (2: 44, 45)

When the Spirit comes, wealth and power are distributed and not accumulated by a few.
And boldness abounds.
 
Jim Wallis has told about the times in South Africa when apartheid reigned, Nelson Mandela was in prison, and church people were among the few speaking out in protest.

One day a protest at St. George’s Cathedral in Capetown was cancelled by the government.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu said, "OKAY, THEN WE’LL JUST HAVE CHURCH."

And so they did.

A crowd gathered in the Cathedral; hundreds of police massed on the outside, then entered the Cathedral, and stood along the walls to intimidate the worshippers.

Tutu stood and said, "THIS SYSTEM OF APARTHEID CANNOT STAND BECAUSE IT IS EVIL."
Then he pointed to the police along the walls of the sanctuary and said, "YOU ARE POWERFUL, VERY POWERFUL, BUT YOU ARE NOT GODS AND I SERVE A GOD WHO CANNOT BE MOCKED."

Then Tutu flashed his trademark smile and said to the soldiers, "SINCE YOU HAVE ALREADY LOST, I INVITE YOU TODAY TO COME AND JOIN THE WINNING SIDE."

The congregation erupted and began dancing.

Then they danced out into the streets. The police retreated—they hadn’t expected dancing worshippers.

The long struggle didn’t end there, of course, but many eventually did join the winning side---even Nelson Mandela’s jailer who danced with him at Mandela’s inauguration.
 
General Conference 2016 will be meeting on Pentecost Sunday.
Come, Holy Spirit, come:

• Make our church bold;
• Make our church as diverse as all creation;
• Make our priority the poor and not ourselves; and
• May all present at General Conference eat their food with glad and generous hearts, praise God and have the goodwill of all. (2:47)

La Libertad de Pentecostés

Tal vez un comienzo más certero a la historia del Día de Pentecostés leería “Estaban todos juntos acobardándose” en vez de “Estaban todos unánimes juntos.” (2:1)
 
Porque estaban acobardándose, escondiéndose de los batallones sanguinarios del Imperio Romano quienes querían ejecutar a los seguidores de Jesús en una muerte humillante, como habían hecho a Jesús.
 
Así que, se encerraron, se escondieron en las sombras, y trataron de no ser vistos. 
 
¿Vivirían el resto de sus vidas en las sombras, con esta actitud defensiva y derrotada?
 
El Día de Pentecostés dice ¡QUE NO!
El Día de Pentecostés es el día cuando los discípulos se aparecen en público.
El Día de Pentecostés es un día de rebelión político y de resistencia.
El Día de Pentecostés es el día cuando Dios lo hace claro que toda la creación pertenece a Dios y que Dios la redimirá.
 
El Día de Pentecostés personas de cada cultura, cada raza, “de todas las naciones bajo el cielo” (2:5) ya no se confrontan con violencia sino con conversación y un idioma común.
 
Entonces Pedro predicó el Evangelio de Dios a esta multitud atontada y 3000 de ellos se convirtieron a esta secta pequeña y perseguida. 
 
Cómo vivían juntos dio credibilidad a la prédica de Pedro.  En contraste con la economía jerárquica del Imperio Romano, estos conversos compartían todas sus cosas en común y ni uno se encontraba en necesidad.  (2:44, 45)
 
Cuando el Espíritu viene, las riquezas y el poder son distribuidos y no son acumulados por unos pocos.
 
Y la audacia abunda.
 
Jim Wallis hablaba de los tiempos en Sud África cuando el apartheid reinaba, Nelson Mandela estaba en la prisión, y personas de la iglesia eran los pocos que estaban protestando.
 
Un día una protesta en la catedral de San Jorge en Capetown fue cancelada por el gobierno.
 
El arzobispo Desmond Tutu dijo: ESTÁ BIEN, ENTONCES SIMPLEMENTE VAMOS A TENER SERVICIO DE CULTO.
 
Y así lo hicieron.
 
Una multitud se reunió en la catedral; cientos de policías se reunieron afuera, y entonces entraron en la catedral, y se paraban junto a las paredes para intimidar a los que participaban en el servicio.
 
Tutu se paró y dijo: ESTE SISTEMA DE APARTHEID NO PUEDE PERMANECER PORQUE ES MALO.
 
Entonces indicó a los policías junto a las paredes en el santuario y dijo: UDS. SON PODEROSOS, MUY PODEROSOS.  PERO UDS. NO SON DIOSES Y YO SIRVO A UN DIOS DE QUIEN NO SE PUEDE BURLAR.
 
Entonces Tutu dio su sonrisa que era su marca y les dijo a los soldados: DESDE QUE UDS. YA HAN PERDIDO, LES INVITO A VENIR Y JUNTARSE CON EL LADO GANADOR.
 
La congregación estaba en erupción y comenzó a bailar.
 
Entonces salieron y bailaron en las calles.  Los policías se retiraron – no habían esperado devotos bailando.
 
La lucha larga no terminó allí, claro, pero muchos sí se juntaron con el lado ganador – aún el carcelero de Nelson Mandela quien bailó con él en la inauguración de Mandela.
 
La Conferencia General de 2016 se reunirá el domingo de Pentecostés.
 
Ven, Espíritu Santo, ven:

• Haz que nuestra iglesia sea audaz;
• Haz que nuestra iglesia sea tan diversa como toda la creación;
• Haz que nuestra prioridad sea los pobres y que no sea nosotros mismos; y
• Que todos los que están en la Conferencia General coman su comida con corazones alegres y generosos, y que den alabanzas a Dios y que tengan benevolencia a todos.  (2:47)
