In this week’s exciting episode from our ongoing drama THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES, Mediterranean missionaries Paul and Silas prove themselves to be disturbers of the marketplace and transgressors of every hierarchical structure the Roman Empire enforced.

How could they not end up in a Roman prison, beaten and bloodied? After all, they were followers of jailbird Jesus.

They clung to the one who drove the moneychangers out of the Temple and said “Blessed are you who are poor…But woe to you who are rich…” (Luke 6: 230-26)

Their backs bled from their flogging and their feet bled from the stocks because their hearts bled for the poor and vulnerable:

  • For THE SLAVE GIRL who “had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune telling.” (16:16)   Paul and Silas saw these slave-owners for what they were---money-pimps and human traffickers---and abruptly ended their racketeering;
  • For THEIR JAILER who feared for his life when an earthquake opened all the prison doors and unfastened all the chains. (16:26) Paul and Silas saved this Roman functionary from termination and his family from poverty by hanging around and befriending him.

Paul and Silas identified with the poor and economically vulnerable as much as did their Lord.  Their face-to-face encounters with the poor showed them how demoralizing and debilitating is abject poverty. They saw it. They smelled it. They put their lives at risk fighting it.

What do we know about poverty? Chicago Tribune columnist John Scalzi wrote a column titled BEING POOR.  Some excerpts:

  • Being poor is knowing exactly how much everything costs.
  • Being poor is hoping the toothache goes away.
  • Being poor is $6 short on the utility bill and no way to close the gap.
  • Being poor is knowing you work as hard as anyone, anywhere.
  • Being poor is people surprised to discover you’re not actually stupid.
  • Being poor is people surprised to discover you’re not actually lazy.
  • Being poor is deciding it’s all right to base a relationship on shelter.
  • Being poor is knowing how hard it is to stop being poor.

An unknown (to me) wrote ALL THROWED AWAY:
“How do I feel?
I felt all throwed away
Like an old shoe in the rain
Or a chicken heart In the butcher’s hand
Was how I felt,
And blue as a week of Mondays.

“You don’t know what a bad time is,
Girl, you livin’ child’s play
Til they sweep you under the rug
And you feel
All throwed away.”

Paul and Silas staked their lives on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (It’s still the Easter season, dear preachers!) Consequently they stood with everyone threatened to be throwed away by poverty, exploitation or oppression. Paul and Silas knew the future belonged to them—but not without struggle and confrontation

Following Paul and Silas will never be boring—and we’ll surely meet some interesting people.

PABLO, SILAS, LOS POBRES Y LOS VULNERABLES

Hechos 16:16-34

  • Por LA ESCLAVA quien “tenía espíritu de adivinación.”  (16:16) Pablo y Silas vieron a estos amos de esclavos por lo que eran – chulos ganando dinero y traficantes en personas – y abruptamente terminaron su chantaje;

¿Cómo me siento?
Me siento completamente echada

Siguiendo a Pablo y Silas jamás será aburrido – y seguramente vamos a conocer a algunas personas interesantes.
