“Grace Is Breaking Out All Over”

This week finds the preacher with great preaching texts. We have the amazing change in Simon Peter who has learned that the Gentiles who he has assumed to be unclean are to be included in the new community. Now the Jewish Christians are on his case for allowing the uncircumcised to have table fellowship but Simon doesn’t waver. John 13:31 ff. offers a new commandment that we are to love one another just as the Christ has loved us. No exceptions, everyone gets some love! Ps. 148 is all about praise. Sea monsters and all the deeps, fire and hail, snow and frost, creeping things and flying birds, young and old, men and women alike join the praise movement. Rev. 21:1-6. reveals a new heaven and earth where God will wipe away every tear—death will be no more, all things made new. Wow!
The negative stuff is not allowed this Sunday. Get rid of those gloomy Calvin-type Prayers of Confession. The Lord has accomplished a new thing in Jesus. Grace is breaking out all over!
I need to say this better. Recently I read of a conservative seminary that is losing its young men and women candidates. The students have Muslim friends, and they are tired of being told that these persons are lost and consigned to hell. A professor who left responded by saying that the school is in trouble. He continued: The control that we have on these kids has been a reward and punishment doctrine of heaven or hell—getting right with God or else. If we lose this teaching we are done. But the students believe that we are simply wrong to judge. Grace abounds!
Next Sunday these Biblical passages offer the preacher an opportunity to present the amazing power of grace—the gift freely given. Grace is breaking out all over—Go preach—Christ is Risen, Indeed!
Prayer: God, we stand amazed in your presence. We who deserve nothing are blessed with abundant life. You turn our old ways of thinking inside out and up side down. We feel so blessed to be free. Give to us each the courage simply to celebrate life in the midst of death, truth in the midst of falsehood. We give you the glory. Amen

Esta semana encuentra al pastor/a la pastora con textos excelentes para la prédica. Tenemos el cambio extraordinario en Simón Pedro que ha aprendido que los gentiles, a quienes él ha asumido ser impuros, han de ser incluidos en la nueva comunidad. Ahora los cristianos judíos le atacan por dejar que los incircuncisos tenga el compañerismo de la mesa, pero Simón no vacila. Juan 13:31 ff. ofrece un mandamiento nuevo que hemos de amarnos unos a otros como el Cristo nos ha amado. ¡No hay excepciones, todos reciben amor! El Salmo 148 trata completamente con la alabanza. Monstruos marinos y todos los abismos, fuego y granizo, nieve y vapor, reptiles y volátiles, ancianos y niños, hombres y mujeres también se juntan en este movimiento de alabanza. Apocalipsis 21:1-6 revela un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva donde Dios enjugará toda lágrima – y ya no habrá más muerte, todas las cosas son nuevas. ¡Vaya!
Las cosas negativas no son permitidas este domingo. Quiten las oraciones de confesión al estilo de calvinista. El Señor ha efectuado una cosa nueva en Jesús. ¡La gracia brota en todas partes!
Necesito decir esto mejor. Recientemente leí de un seminario conservador que está perdiendo a sus candidatos de hombres y mujeres jóvenes. Los estudiantes tienen amigos musulmanes, y están cansados de oír que estas personas son perdidas y serán enviadas al infierno. Un profesor quien salió respondió por decir que la escuela está en apuro. Continuó: El control que tenemos en estos jóvenes ha sido una doctrina de recompensa y castigo del cielo o del infierno – justifícate con Dios o vas a sufrir las consecuencias. Si perdemos esta enseñanza somos terminados. Pero los estudiantes creen que simplemente estamos incorrectos en juzgar. ¡La gracia abunda!
El próximo domingo estas lecturas bíblicas le ofrecen al pastor/a la pastora una oportunidad de presentar el poder asombroso de la gracia – el don dado libremente. ¡La gracia brota en todas partes – Vayan a predicar – Sí que Cristo es resucitado – De verdad!
Oración: Dios, nos paramos pasmados en tu presencia. Nosotros, que no merecemos nada, somos bendecidos con la vida abundante. Tú conviertes nuestra maneras antiguas de pensar completamente al revés. Nos sentimos tan bendecidos ser libres. Danos a cada uno de nosotros el coraje de simplemente celebrar la vida en el medio de la muerte, la verdad en el medio de la mentira. Te damos la gloria. Amén.
