Luke and Matthew each tell of Jesus being  tempted in the wilderness three times: 1) Easy Bread, 2) The whole world is yours for the taking, 3) Just say the word and you are invincible. Bread, Place, and Power. Who could/would ask for anything more? Of course, each time Jesus will reject the tempter by quoting from his Confirmation Manual, the Book of Deuteronomy. See  8:3, 6:16, 6:1.

The three temptations at first glance do not apply to us. But look again. Who would not favor easy bread rather than having to work by the sweat of the brow? When the Lottery climbs above 300 million, folks line up in hopes of winning easy bread. And what of property? How much of the world should be ours? The farmer said to the realtor, "We don’t need much, just the land that is contiguous to us on four sides of our property." And what of those folks who tempt fate by tightrope walking and hang gliding? To be spectacular—to stand out of the crowd—to be ahead in the polls sounds good. But the ugliest form of humanity is the narcissistic personality. This person who thinks only of himself rather than the welfare of others. For the narcissist, there is not room in the world for the weak—as Ayn Rand taught, "We are entitled to earn as much as we can within the law—to be rich." She might also have added, "And in some cases, the law may need to be changed to make it happen."

The Gospel counters such logic with the idea that bread that is hoarded becomes wormy—bread is to be shared.

The whole world is ours—to love, to care for, to make fruitful, to share. To have power is to learn how to give it up.

The person who is not overly impressed with herself will have many friends.

Prayer: God, we make life so hard for ourselves and others. On this cold winter day, just before the birth of spring, open our eyes, our hearts, our minds to the wonder of simply being alive. Amen

Tentados y probados

El tener poder is aprender a dejarlo.
