"Meanwhile Down In the Valley"

The Epiphany Season ends with Jesus taking his leaders up the mountain where they experience a bit of a light show. They are dazzled, as Jesus will reveal that all he has been doing is connected to God’s purpose from the very beginning. And for a moment, they discover the new world that is always already within the old—especially if we learn how to see. In a word, Jesus will help us see that who he is and what he does is connected to the historical past of Israel, and with God’s intentions for the Church today.
Jesus will then lead the disciples into the valley where the blind, the deaf, the lame, the rejected wait. And the disciples and each of us who choose to be the Church will discover the ministry of neighborliness: to open the eyes of the blind, to unstop the ears of the deaf, to hug the rejected, and to help the lame trade the crutch for the pogo stick. Meanwhile down in the valley 2016…
These days in the retired relationship, we worship at one of the proud old churches that the Church Growth pundits are pronouncing dead. Well, it is true that Grace, one of the Conference’s great old churches, failed to meet its apportionment obligations last year. One reason, we had to provide funds for our free preschool when the state government didn’t come through with promised funds in a timely way. Grace could not allow those young teachers to go unpaid. This year as we closed the books, things are looking much better.
Despite word that we are finished, Grace UMC marches on: providing a free health clinic on Tuesdays that has given hope to hundreds of the uninsured and undocumented. And each Tuesday, there is a free meal for all, serving over 2,500 meals last year.
It is true that membership is not as large, but we are seeing more persons of color, including immigrants. And young adults who really would like a different experience for their children are finding us. Would you believe we still have a large youth program? Forty kids and adults took the Heritage Trip to England—a program that continues since the 1970s.
And the most hopeful sign of all is the way in which this Church defends, accepts, and loves the people, especially the much-abused LGBTQ community. What a gift they are to our congregation.
We like to think that the mountaintop experience can happen down in the valley too, as we practice neighborliness to the least and the last. We invite other churches to join with us. Any congregation that practices neighborliness has a future.
And it would be fun to share this kind of preaching in this space if you have a good story!
Prayer: God, in our own way, we are trying to do what your servant John told us to do, namely to serve the present age—so let it be our calling to fulfill. Amen
Excursus: Saint Valentine
Emperor Claudius II believed that his soldiers should not marry—Marriage made poor soldiers. Friar Valentine became the “friend of lovers” by marrying them in secret. He was caught in the act and martyred. We don’t know for sure about all of this but we like to think he died for the sake of love.

La estación de la Epifanía termina con Jesús tomando a sus líderes y subiendo la montaña donde experimentan un poco de una presentación de luces. Están deslumbrados, como Jesús revelará que todo lo que él ha estado haciendo es conectado al propósito desde el comienzo. Y por un momento descubren el nuevo mundo que ya siempre está dentro del nuevo – especialmente si aprendemos a ver. En una palabra, Jesús nos ayudará que quien es y lo que hace es conectado al pasado histórico de Israel, y con las intenciones de Dios para la Iglesia de hoy.
Entonces, Jesús dirigirá a los discípulos al valle donde los ciegos, los sordos, los cojos, los rechazados esperan. Y los discípulos y cada uno de nosotros que escogemos ser la Iglesia descubrirá el ministerio de ser prójimo: abrir los ojos de los ciegos, abrir los oídos de los sordos, abrazar a los rechazados, y ayudar a los cojos para que puedan cambiar la muleta por un palo de pogo. Mientras tanto abajo en el valle de 2016 . . .
Estos días en la relación jubilada, adoramos en una de las iglesias orgullosa y vieja que los expertos en el crecimiento de la iglesia pronuncian como muerta. Pues es verdad que Grace, una de la grandes iglesias viejas, faltó en pagar sus repartimientos el año pasado. Una razón, tuvimos que proveer fondos para nuestro preescolar gratis cuando el gobierno estatal no pagó los fondos prometidos en una manera puntual. Grace no podía dejar que los maestros jóvenes no recibieran su salario. Al fin de este año las cosas parecían mucho mejor.
A pesa de la palabra que estamos terminados, la IMU Grace sigue marchando: proveyendo una clínica de salud gratis los martes que ha dado esperanza a cientos de personas que no tienen aseguranza o que no tienen documentos. Y cada martes, hay una comida gratis para todos, sirviendo 2,500 comidas el año pasado.
Es verdad que la membresía no es tan grande, pero vemos a más personas de color, incluso a inmigrantes. Y adultos jóvenes que verdaderamente querrían una experiencia diferente para sus niños nos encuentran. ¿Creería Ud. que todavía tenemos un programa grande para jóvenes? Cuarenta jóvenes adultos tomaron el viaje de la Herencia Metodista a Inglaterra – un programa que sigue desde los 1970.
Y el signo con más esperanza es la manera en que esta iglesia defiende, acepta, y ama a la gente, especialmente a la comunidad LGBTQ [homosexual]. Qué don son a nuestra congregación.
Nos gusta creer que la experiencia en la cumbre de la montaña puede ocurrir en el valle también, como practicamos el ser prójimo a los más pequeños y a los últimos. Invitamos a otras iglesias a juntarse con nostros. Cualquiera congregación que practica el ser prójimo tiene un futuro.

Escursus: San Valentín
El emperador Cluadio II creía que sus soldados no debieran casarse – el casamiento causó que eran malos soldados. El fraile Valentín se hizo “el amigo de los amantes” por casarlos en secreto. Fue sorprendido en el acto y fue martirizado. No sabemos por seguro acerca de todo esto pero nos gusta creer que murió por el amor.
