“As One Untimely Born!”

Wow! We have three great preaching texts: Isaiah offers the call of the prophet. Luke reports Jesus teaching the fishermen how to fish. (Does it seem strange that these fishermen never seem to know where the fish are without help from Jesus?) Must be a sermon in there somewhere!
Corinthians 15:1-11 is perhaps the oldest Easter sermon. Paul offers his proof of the resurrection.
He first will make the case to the non-believers, that they need not take his word regarding the truth of the Resurrection. Just go and check it out with at least 500 brothers and sisters—many still alive. Then Paul adds a word of hope for each of us when he speaks as one untimely born—he too experienced the risen Christ. I like that phrase because I too am untimely born and if it could happen to Paul, perhaps it happens still to those of us who seek the Lord today.
When we preach this text we bring words of assurance and hope into the present moment. We are no longer looking into the past for some validation.
And on this first Sunday, as the bread is broken, the wine poured out, and we hear again the ancient words, “This is my life poured out for you”—maybe, just maybe—we, the untimely born crowd, will discover that the real presence has nothing to do with time, clocks, calendar, the past. It has everything to do with our intention to lead a new life dedicated to neighborliness. Indeed, the Luke text seems to fit as those old fishermen leave their nets behind and decide to learn a new kind of fishing—namely to gather in the people to hear and believe.
Marking Time
On this day in 1964, the Beatles performed for the first time in the U.S., giving birth to the flower children revolution.
And on this day in 1766 Pierre Toussaint, a born slave who worked as a hair dresser in New York City, gave his money to the homeless and became a friend of homeless black youth. If the process of canonization succeeds, Toussaint will be the first official black American Saint.
Prayer: God thank you for giving us new music and saintly behavior on the same day. We who are untimely born praise you for the gift of un-deserved life. Amen

¡Caray! Tenemos tres textos excelentes para la prédica: Isaías ofrece el llamado del profeta. Lucas reporta a Jesús enseñando a los pescadores a pescar. (¿Parece extraño que estos pescadores jamás saben dónde están los peces sin la ayuda de Jesús?) ¡Debe de haber un sermón en esto en alguna parte!
Corintios 15:1-11 tal vez es el sermón más antiguo acerca de la Resurrección . Pablo ofrece su prueba de la resurrección. Primero hará el caso a los no creyentes que no necesitan tomar su palabra sobre la verdad de la Resurrección. Simplemente vaya a averiguarlo con por lo menos 500 hermanos y hermanas – muchos que todavía viven. Entonce Pablo añade una palabra de esperanza para cada uno de nosotros cuando habla como a un abortivo – también él experimentó al Cristo resucitado. Me gusta la frase porque yo también soy como a un abortivo y si pudiera ocurrir a Pablo, tal vez todavía ocurre a los de nosotros que buscamos al Señor hoy.
Cuando predicamos este texto traemos palabras de aseguranza y esperanza al momento presente. Ya no miramos al pasado para alguna validación.
Y este primer domingo, mientras se parte el pan, se vierte el vino, y oímos otra vez las palabras ancianas, “Esto es mi vida derramada por ti” – quizás, tal vez – nosotros, los que somos como abortivos, descubriremos que la verdadera presencia no tiene nada que hacer con el tiempo, relojes, calendario, el pasado. Tiene todo que hacer con nuestra intención de tener una nueva vida dedicada a ser buen prójimo. De verdad el texto de Lucas parece caber como esos viejos pescadores dejan atrás sus redes y deciden aprender una nueva clase de pescar – concretamente reunir a personas para que puedan oír y creer.

En este día en 1964, los Beatles cantaron por primera vez en los EE.UU, dando luz a la revolución de los jóvenes de flores.
Y en este día en 1766 Pierre Toussaint, nacido esclavo, quien trabajó como peluquero en la ciudad de Nueva York, dio su dinero a los sin techo y se hizo amigo de los jóvenes negros. Si el proceso de canonización tiene éxito, Toussaint será el primero santo negro y oficial de América.
Oración: Dios gracias por darnos nueva música y comportamiento santo en el mismo día. Nosotros, los que somos como abortivos, te alabamos por el don de la vida que no merecemos. Amén.
