"Where Were You...?"

Job 38 June 21, 2015
By William Steward: whsteward@mediacombb.net

For more than 30 chapters Job and his friends (and young Elihu) posture and probe, cajole and kvetch, defy and defend God for the terrible calamities that had befallen the blameless Job. According to literary critic Leslie Fiedler: "Never has poetry been made at a higher decibel level or a steeper pitch of acrimony..." Abruptly God calls an end to this cacophony of kibitzers with a great reversal—the questioner would now become the questioned:

"Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, 'Who is this that darkens counsel with words without knowledge? I shall question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?" (38:1-4)

For 5 more chapters God relentlessly questions Job about Job's knowledge of his puny place in God's magnificent creation, "Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook...Will you play with it as a bird?" (41:1-5)

Job relents and the great book quickly reaches a conclusion.

Of course, I am not about to unravel all (any) of the mysteries of this Wisdom Literature classic. My counsel would be many words without knowledge.

What I hope to do is inspire us preachers to challenge Iowa United Methodists to take responsibility for the unique position we have as the first caucus state of the 2016 Presidential election.

Let us be morally serious. Let us imagine that God's question will be turned on us: WHERE WERE YOU?

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN ALL THOSE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES CAME TO YOUR TOWN, TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD? DID YOU HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE? DID YOU ADVOCATE FOR THE POOR?

So, review our SOCIAL PRINCIPLES. Then corner the candidates who comes by. Ask them what they think of our United Methodist teaching about HEALTH CARE: "Health care is a basic human right...We believe it is a governmental responsibility to provide all citizens with health care." Or CLIMATE JUSTICE: "Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, space are to be valued and conserved because they are God's creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings." POVERTY: "We are called to support the poor and challenge the rich...Every person has the right to a job at a living wage." COLLECTIVE BARGAINING: "We support the right of all public and private employees and employers to organize into unions and other groups of their own choosing."

Hold the candidates' feet to the fire and have a little fun.

Our conversations may reach high decibel levels. There will be conflicts. Let us persevere with holy enthusiasm, remembering William Sloane Coffin's great line: "Jesus said 'Love your enemies' not don't make any."

Wouldn't it be great if each of 190,000 Iowa United Methodists interrogated 6 candidates? (Total: over a million incidents of advocacy!) Wouldn't it be gratifying if candidates finished their Iowa campaigns and said, "Wow. Those Iowa United Methodists are methodical. They wouldn't quit. I can't wait to get out of here."

“Dónde estabas tú . . .”

yo te preguntaré y tú me contestarás.
