"Pentecost in Public"

When the Day of Pentecost dawned, the Roman Empire had the followers of Jesus just where they wanted them: closeted, cowering, huddled together in a room in Jerusalem.

The Roman strategy was a time-honored, winning strategy. Any rebellion that broke out against their brutal rule was crushed, immediately and violently. The rebel leaders were captured and crucified, made to suffer a public, humiliating death.

This was the fate of thousands—including Jesus of Nazareth.

And Jesus' people were following the Roman script: they went into hiding. Who could blame them? They got the message. What happened to your rebel rabbi will happen to you. Be intimidated. Be terminally intimidated.

United Methodist pastor and activist Bill Wylie Kellerman has stated what was at stake in this crisis: "The question...is this: Will the movement be ruled by fear? Will they be contained and confined? Rendered timid and silent? Pentecost says no..."

(The Holy Spirit comes and) the disciples take the resurrection to the streets. They go public...

"Some people say they have had too much to drink. Granted this refers in part to the inspired and ecstatic utterances, but I wager even more so to their reckless courage. After what's been done to Jesus, you'd have to be either crazy or drunk to be shouting his name in the streets and pointing accusing fingers at the executioners." They took to the streets and publicly defied Rome—and their movement grew exponentially (Acts 2:41).

A Pew Research Study released last week reported that 70% of the U. S. population claimed to be part of a church in 2014, compared to 78% in 2007.

People begged to join the first-century Jesus-movement. What was the attraction?

• The disciples went PUBLIC. Perhaps we could advertise not only our church dinners but also put signs in our church yards announcing what we United Methodists believe: HEALTH CARE IS A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT! WAR IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE TEACHINGS AND EXAMPLE OF CHRIST! (See our Social Principles)
• They put themselves at RISK. They were utterly dependent upon the God of resurrection and so were utterly independent of everything else. Therefore, they shared everything in common. (Acts 2:44) O freedom!
• They spoke with CLARITY. Everyone in the known world heard them speaking in their own languages. Everyone understood them. They were still Jesus' people—on the side of the poor. There was no mistaking them for worshippers of what Professor Harrel Beck called "the Great Mush God."
• They made a practice of EATING-PRAYING-STUDYING TOGETHER—always expanding the table to include more outsiders, despised and unclean ones. (Acts 2:42)
• They TRUSTED THE HOLY SPIRIT OF FREEDOM—which fell on believers of every stripe, took them to the streets, and led them to tell the truth, risk be damned.

And we, in our time, are continuing the story. Yikes.
Come, Holy Spirit, come.

"Pentecostés en Público"

Cuando el Día de Pentecostés amaneció, el Imperio Romano tenía los seguidores de Jesús exactamente donde los quería: encerrados, encogiéndose de miedo, apiñados en un aposento en Jerusalén.

La estrategia romana era estrategia consagrada y vencedora.  Cualquier rebelión que ocurrió contra su gobierno brutal fue arrugada, inmediatamente y violentamente.  Los líderes de los rebeldes fueron capturados y crucificados, tenían que sufrir una muerte pública y humillante.  

Éste fue el destino de miles – incluso a Jesús de Nazaret.

Y el pueblo de Jesús seguía el guión romano: se fueron a esconderse.  ¿Y quién puede echarles la culpa?  Habían recibido el mensaje.  Lo que le ocurrió a su rabino rebelde les ocurrirá a Uds.  Que sean intimidados.  Que sean intimidados terminalmente.  

El pastor y activista metodista unido Bill Wylie Kellerman ha dicho lo que estaba en juego en esta crisis: “La pregunta . . . es esta:  ¿Será gobernado por miedo el movimiento?  ¿Serán contenidos y encerrados?  ¿Serán tímidos y mudos?  El Pentecostés dice que no . . .

(El Espíritu Santo viene y) los discípulos toman la resurrección a las calles.  Se hacen públicos…

“Algunas personas dicen que están borrachos.  Dado esto refiere en parte a las expresiones inspiradas y extáticas, pero me apuesto que fue más a causa de su valentía atrevida.  Después de lo que le han hecho a Jesús, o estabas loco o estabas borracho estar en las calles gritando su nombre y señalando con el dedo a los verdugos.”  (ESTACIONES DE FE Y CONCIENCIA: KAIROS, CONFESIÓN, LITURGIA)

Fueron a las calles y públicamente desafiaron a Roma – y su movimiento creció exponencialmente (Hechos 2:41).

Un estudio de Pew Research publicado la semana pasada reportó que 70% de la población de los Estados Unidos dijeron que eran parte de una iglesia en 2014, comparado a 78% en 2007.  

Personas rogaban para juntarse con el movimiento de Jesús del primer siglo .  ¿Qué era la atracción?

• Los discípulos se hacían PÚBLICOS.  Tal vez pudiéramos publicar no solamente nuestras comidas de la iglesia sino también poner nuestros rótulos en nuestros patios de la iglesia anunciando que nosotros metodistas unidos creemos: ¡EL CUIDADO DE SALUD ES UN DERECHO HUMANO!  ¡LA GUERRA ES INCOMPATIBLE CON LAS ENSEÑANZAS Y EJEMPLO DE CRISTO!  (Vea nuestros principios sociales)
• Se ponían en RIESGO.  Dependían absolutamente del Dios de la resurrección y también estaban absolutamente independientes de todo lo demás.  Por eso, compartían todo en común.  (Hechos 2:44)  ¡O libertad!
• Hablaban con CLARIDAD.  Todos en el mundo conocido los oían hablando en sus propios idiomas.  Todos los comprendían.  Todavía eran el pueblo de Jesús – de parte de los pobres.  No podían equivocarse que eran adoradores de los que el Profesor Harrel Beck nombró “el gran Dios de gacha.”
• Tenía una costumbre de COMER-ORAR-ESTUDIAR JUNTOS – siempre expandían la mesa para incluir a más personas que eran parte del grupo, a más que eran despreciados, a más que eran impuros.  (Hechos 2:42)
• CONFIABAN DEL ESPÍRITU SANTO DE LIBERTAD – el cual descendió en los creyentes de toda clase, y los llevó a las calles, y les causó decir la verdad, no importa el riesgo.  

Y nosotros, en nuestro tiempo, continuamos la historia.  ¡Caray!

Ven, Espíritu Santo, ven.
