Nein!— No!

At first glance the lessons for this Sunday simply do not work well for me. We have the Passover story which doesn’t seem to fit for Christians in September. It does just fine for the Jews as they gear up for the celebration of being delivered from slavery and made a people. Psalm 119, the longest psalm in the Hebrew Scriptures, 176 verses is really a history lesson. Ezekiel and the Gospel offer some instructions as to how we deal with problem people in the congregation.
The Roman text might just save the day for me. I love those words, “Owe no one anything except to love one another.” That is how you keep the commandments. Then Paul offers this word: It is now the moment for you to wake from your sleep…the night is for spent gone, the day is near. Let us lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.”
Paul is saying to the people of God, “Wake up, act, do something!” I remember hearing the story of Karl Barth. When confronted with Hitler and his plans, he simply said, “No!” No compromise, no dialogue. When evil is so apparent, a violation of everything good, you simply say “no.” He knew that to go along with this man would end in disaster. History does not repeat itself but it often does rhyme. When I hear a leader decide to begin a new persecution of transgender people, I say No! When he decides to rid the country of dreamer kids, and limit the number of immigrants who may come to live here, I say No! I could go on and on with this. Call it meddling, call it the raving of an old preacher, but in the name of God, when will the Church find its voice and say No!
Perhaps we should read On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From The Twentieth Century, by Timothy Snyder. He would tell us to not accept persecution and demeaning speech as normal, or to say that it’s just politics, as if to say this too will pass away. Nein!
Prayer: God, help us to find within ourselves the courage to resist evil wherever we find it, and to be reminded of those saints who stood against the principalities and powers, who simply said, “No!” Amen.

A primera vista las lecciones para este domingo simplemente no me caen bien. Tenemos la historia de la Pascua la cual no parece caber bien para cristianos en septiembre. Está bien para los judíos como se preparan para la celebración de ser librados de la esclavitud y hechos un pueblo. Salmos 119, el salmo más largo en las escrituras hebreas, 176 versículos, es verdaderamente una lección de historia. Ezequiel y el Evangelio ofrecen algunas instrucciones en cómo tratamos como personas problemáticas en la congregación.
Es posible que el texto de Romanos pueda evitar la catástrofe para mí. Me encantan las palabras: “No debáis a nadie nada, sino el amaros unos a otros.” Así se guardan los mandamientos. Entonces Pablo ofrece este mensaje: “Es ya hora de levantarnos del sueño, porque ahora está más cerca de nosotros nuestra salvación que cuando creímos. La noche está avanzada y se acerca el día. Desechemos, pues, las obras de las tinieblas y vistámonos las armas de la luz.”
Pablo le dice al pueblo de Dios, “¡Despiértense, actúen, hagan algo!” Recuerdo la historia de Karl Barth. Cuando confrontado con Hitler y sus planes, simplemente dijo: “¡Que no!” Ningún acuerdo, ningún diálogo. Cuando la maldad es tan evidente, una violación de todo bueno, simplemente dice “¡Que no!” Sabía que el consentir con este hombre terminaría en desastre. La historia no se repite pero frecuentemente sí rima. Cuando oigo que un líder decide comenzar una nueva persecución de personas transgéneros, digo “¡Que no!” Cuando decide expulsar a los soñadores y limitar el número de inmigrantes que pueden venir a vivir aquí, digo “¡Que no!” Podría seguir sin parar. Se puede nombrarlo interferencia, puede decir que habla delirente de un viejo predicador, pero en el nombre de Dios cuando encontrará la Iglesia su voz y decir “¡Que no!”
Quizás debemos leer Sobre la tiranía: Veinte lecciones del Siglo XX, por Timothy Snyder. Nos diría no aceptar la persecución y la expresión degradante como algo normal, ni debemos decir que solamente es la política, como si esto también pasara. ¡Nein! ¡Que no!
Oración: Dios, ayúdanos a hallar dentro de nosotros el valor de resistir la maldad dondequiera que la hallemos, y ser recordados de esos santos quienes se pararon contra los principiados y las potestades, quienes simplemente dijeron “¡Que no!” Amén.
