I say Pu’ah  (Resist!)

It’s hard to pass up the story of Shiphrah, (fair one) and Puah, (girl, later identified as Miriam), two midwives who were instructed by the Pharaoh to destroy the Hebrew boy babies. They simply refused. When the Pharaoh asked why, they told a small fib—“These Hebrew women are vigorous and give birth without our service.” This may be the first recorded act of civil disobedience. Of course it also sets the stage for the Hebrew journey as we move into the Moses story and the move of the people out of slavery into the wilderness and freedom.

I sometimes have taught students in confirmation to shout “Pu’ah!” as a form of resistance to evil. The kids love it!

The Romans 12 text fits well with this text as Paul speaks his great word, “Be not conformed to this world—be you transformed by the renewal of your mind.” These days when government, from president on down the list, seems to have fallen into some awful behavior patterns that would make even the Pharaoh blush, we have a wonderful opportunity to find our voices—to not go along. I say shout “Pu’ah!” on the entire crazy mess.

Mathew16 also seems to fit the conversation. Old Simon Peter, remember him? He is the blustering disciple with weak knees, a bit afraid, but one who tries harder. Jesus will hand him the keys to the kingdom—“From this day you will no longer be Peter—you are Rocky!” (modern translation) This dysfunctional family of Jacob will have a new beginning called Church—and the very gates of hell shall not prevail against it. After looking at how it all began—the kind of leadership it had—we should feel more confident about the future of the church these days.

The call that counts comes from Paul in Romans. “Be not conformed to the powers of this age, resist”—do not go along to get along. Racism, bigotry, white supremacy, neo-nazism should be stuff to read about in the history books rather than present among us these days—wearing different clothes but in some respects more dangerous, because some folks wearing the clothes live and work in the White House. If you find these words too strong for the sermon, why not find your way to shout “Pu’ha!” Old Rocky lost his nerve several times, but finally got it right—and that is hopeful for an old guy like me who sometimes speaks when he should listen more. If none of this works then try the Psalm: “Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made the whole creation.” Thanks be to God.

Prayer: God, in these days when we struggle with principalities and powers, keep us loving but strong, open to hear as well as to speak. But speak we must, because we know that silence often is mistaken for consent. Holy One, be thou our vision in these most wonderful and trying times. We pray in the name of Jesus, who revealed to us the promise of life in your name. Amen

Digo Fúa (¡Resistan!)

Es difícil dejar pasar la historia de Sifra (la bella) y Fúa, (muchacha, identificada más tarde como María), dos parteras quienes recibieron órdenes del Faraón que destruyeran los hijos varones de los hebreos. Simplemente negaron. Cuando el Faraón les preguntó por qué, dijeron una mentirijilla – “las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias; son robustas y dan a luz antes que llegue la partera.” Es posible que esto sea el primer acto documentado de desobediencia civil. Claro también prepara el camino para el viaje de los hebreos como entramos en la historia de Moisés y como se muda el pueblo fuera de la esclavitud al desierto y a la libertad. 

Algunas veces les he enseñado a los estudiantes en la clase de confirmación que griten “Fúa” como forma de resistencia. ¡A los jóvenes les encanta! 

El texto de Romanos 12 cabe bien con este texto como Pablo proclama su gran mensaje, “No os conforméis a este mundo, sino transformaos por medio de la renovación de vuestro entendimiento.” Estos días cuando el gobierno, del presidente y abajo, parece haber caído en algunos patrones horribles de comportamiento que causarían que aún el Faraón se ponga colorado, tenemos una oportunidad maravillosa para encontrar nuestras voces – para no aceptar lo que ocurre. Digo – griten “¡Fúa!” en todo este lío loco. 

Mateo 16 también parece caber con la conversación. El buen Simón Pedro, ¿lo recuerda? Es el discípulo en ráfagas con las rodillas débiles, con un poco de miedo, pero uno que se esfuerza más. Jesús le dará las llaves del reino – “Y yo también te digo que ya no eres Pedro – eres Rocoso!” (traducción moderna). Esta familia disfuncional de Jacob tendrá un nuevo comienzo llamado la Iglesia – y las puerta de Hades no la dominarán. Después de considerar cómo comenzó – la clase de liderazgo que tenía – debemos sentir más seguros del futuro de la iglesia estos días. 

El llamado que tiene importancia viene de Pablo en Romanos. “No os conforméis a este mundo, resistid” – no aceptéis para prosperar. El Racismo, la intolerancia, la supremacía de los blancos, los neonazis deben ser cosas acerca de las cuales leemos en los libros de la historia en vez de estar presentes entre nosotros estos días – con ropa diferente pero en algunos aspectos más peligroso porque algunas personas con tal ropa viven y trabajan en la Casa Blanca. Si estas palabras son demasiado fuertes para el sermón, pues que descubra su propia manera de gritar “¡Fúa!” El buen Rocoso perdió su valor varias veces, pero por fin lo tiene correctamente – y eso es esperanzador para un viejo como yo quien algunas veces habla cuando debe escuchar más. Si ninguno de esto le es servicial, entonces que pruebe el Salmo: “Nuestro socorro está en el nombre de Jehová, que hizo el cielo y la tierra.” Gracias a Dios. 

Oración: Dios, en estos días cuando luchamos con principiados y potestades, que nos mantengas cariñosos pero fuertes, abiertos a oír y también a hablar. Porque tenemos que hablar porque sabemos que el silencio frecuentemente se equivoca por consentimiento. Sagrado Dios, que seas nuestra visión en estos tiempos maravillosos y complicados. Oramos en el nombre de Jesús, quien nos reveló la promesa de la vida en tu nombre. Amén.
