“All Have Sinned and Fallen Short…”

Joel 2:23-32; Luke 18:9-14

“Thank God, I am not like other men!”—trouble is, I am. I remember Paul Tillich on the subject that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Tillich said we may think we are free from sin, but who among us has not taken secret delight in noticing the misfortunes of our enemies?

   So we need to be careful with words on this subject. I don’t much like the tax collector, but the poor fellow is caught up in the terrible struggle between the Jews and Rome. The only way they can keep the temple open is to pay tax to Rome.And I don’t much like the Pharisee either because of his low opinion of others. The entire thing is a holy mess. Others are bringing the children to Jesus for blessing. And you can almost hear someone say, “Get them out of here!”

   Perhaps we should take a look at the Joel 2:23-32 passage. We hear the famous word that Luke will quote on the day of Pentecost. The day is coming when:

“I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;

your sons and daughters shall  prophesy,

your old men  shall dream dreams,

and  your young men shall see visions. “

   I spent some time with a group studying the Bible at Cornell College this last weekend. This group in the School for Lay Ministry was a mix of young adults and older folk. One young woman brought her four-month-old baby to the class.

   I had decided to not let the current political mess invade the study. But it was obvious that the class needed to connect what the Bible was saying with the current political scene. They were looking for new dreams and visions, and hopes. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is using these times and the current political contest to birth a new reality–-a new way of  living. We can hope! It felt good to see people wrestle with the text and question what they are experiencing. And we all departed as friends who had struggled, seeking the new dream and vision.

God, send your vision among us. Do not let us go quietly away -- push us to the brink. Grant us wisdom for the living of these days. Amen

Joel 2:23-32; Lucas 18:9-14

y profetizarán vuestros hijos y vuestras hijas;
